President Michel Sleiman strongly condemned Sunday Israel’s airstrike on Syria and its use of Lebanon’s airspace to carry out such an “aggression.”

According to his office, Sleiman “strongly condemned Israel’s aggression on Syrian sites [which it carried out] by violating Lebanese airspace to carry out these attacks which killed a number of civilians.”

“This act is not unusual for a mutual enemy [such as Israel] whose policy is based on aggression that takes advantage of the circumstances Syria is going through to carry out its aggression just as it used to do in Lebanon during its days of crisis.”

Israel carried out two aerial strikes in the past three days in Syria, media reports said. The attacks were likely launched from Lebanon’s airspace which the Jewish State violates on almost a daily basis.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati also denounced the strikes, saying they “underscored once again Israel’s aggressive intentions.”

“[The attacks] fall within the series of continuous areal violations to Lebanon’s sovereignty and its threats against Lebanon,” he added, according to a statement from his office.

Israel’s activities over Lebanon have intensified recently, with 18 warplanes flying over various Lebanese regions from Thursday to Saturday night.

With no official confirmation from Israel on the recent aerial bombardment, it was unclear what the Jewish state had struck.

Syria’s state TV said the attack was against a military facility north of the capital while Reuters, quoting a Western intelligence sources, said the operation hit Iranian-supplied missiles headed to Hezbollah.

“In last night’s attack, as in the previous one, what was attacked were stores of Fateh-110 missiles that were in transit from Iran to Hezbollah,” the intelligence source said.

Sleiman called on the international community again and the United Nations Security Council in particular to discourage Israel from using “its aggressive policy” but respect other countries’ sovereignty and comply with international resolutions.

He also called on the U.N. to convince Israel of the necessity to engage in the peace plan that guarantees stability for the region.

Caretaker Foreign Affairs Minister Adnan Mansour also condemned the airstrike, saying the Jewish state is preparing for something bigger as he called on the Arab League to take a firm stance.

“Once again, the terrorist state of Israeli carries out another aggression against sisterly Syria under a flimsy pretext to justify its barbaric attack which is in preparation for a wide aggression to blow up the region and push it toward a destructive confrontation regardless of the catastrophic results,” the minister said in a statement.

“We urge the Arab League to take firm stand with regards to this dangerous development to prevent what is worse which Israel is preparing for,” Mansour added.

Head of the Lebanese Democratic Party, Talal Arslan, who has visited Assad on several occasion, said the west is now using Israel against Syria, adding that no one should be blamed for seeking to protect Damascus any longer.

“The west which was paralyzed by the Russian-Chinese stance against intervening in Syria is searching today for new channels to carry out its battle against the Syrian people and Israel is perfect for the job because it never respected international rules or agreements,” he said in a statement.

“How can we remain silent over the bombing of Syria?” he asked.

“No one is to blame anymore if they run to protect Syria where the Syrian people are no longer the only ones concerned with defending it but all of us … as long as the issue turned from a domestic Syrian affair into an Israeli aggression whose goals are now obvious,” Arslan said.

Meanwhile, the Amal Movement also condemned “Israel’s latest aggression,”

“[Israel seeks] to enter the Syrian crisis and add fuel to the fire and raise tensions to the point when regional peace and security are threatened,” the party, one of President Bashar Assad’s allies in Lebanon, said.

“Israel’s justification is rejected and the Israeli aggression is an official Israeli policy part of its attempt to drag the region to war and benefit from events in Syria to target the resistance,” it added.

ImageSenior Syrian officials are due to convene in an urgent cabinet meeting later today to discuss a possible response to the recent Israeli airstrike on Damascus, media reports said.

Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi and his ministers will convene later today to study the latest information on the recent Israeli aggression and the potential response to Tel Aviv’s hostile move, the Arabic-language al-Manar TV reported.

Explosions shook Damascus early on Sunday and Syrian state television said Israeli rockets had struck a military research center on the outskirts of the capital.

The blasts occurred a day after an Israeli official said Tel Aviv had carried out an air strike targeting a consignment of missiles in Syria. The research center hit on Sunday was also targeted by Israel in January.

“The new Israeli attack is an attempt to raise the morale of the terrorist groups which have been reeling from strikes by our noble army,” Syrian television said, referring to recent offensives by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces against rebels.

There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials on Sunday’s explosions.

Late in January, the Syrian Army said in a statement that two people were killed and five others injured in the Israeli air strike on a scientific center in Jamraya, 25 kilometers (15 miles) Northwest of the capital Damascus.

The Hypocrisy of Ban Ki-moon about Israel’s Attacks on Syria

We bring to the attention of our readers the following news release about the Israeli attack on Syria from the United Nations. Ban Ki-moon has called ”on all sides to exercise maximum calm and restraint.” No words of condemnation were uttered against Israel’s attack on Syria and Israel is never directly referenced.

It is Israel which has attacked Syria several times now. The aggressor and the victim cannot be equated as equivalents. In essence, Ban Ki-moon is whitewashing the Israeli attacks on Syria. The United Nations Secretariate expects Syria to do nothing and to accept the continuous aggression and assaults from Israel, which is capitalizing on the crisis inside Syria and threatening regional security, without making any condemnation of Israel’s actions in the United Nations.

UN chief calls for maximum calm and restraint after reported Israeli air strikes in Syria

UN News Centre, May 5, 2013.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is gravely concerned about reports of air strikes in Syria by the Israeli Air Force, according to a statement from his spokesperson, which stressed that the United Nations does not have details of the reported incidents nor is in a position to independently verify that they took place.

“The Secretary-General calls on all sides to exercise maximum calm and restraint, and to act with a sense of responsibility to prevent an escalation of what is already a devastating and highly dangerous conflict,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in the statement.

“The Secretary-General urges respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region, and adherence to all relevant Security Council resolutions,” he continued.

A series of powerful explosions rocked the outskirts of Damascus early this morning, which Syrian state television attributed to Israeli missile attacks on a Syrian military installation, according to media reports.

Mr. Ban’s spokesperson underscored that “at this time, the United Nations does not have details of the reported incidents. Nor is the United Nations in a position to independently verify what has occurred.”

Top UN officials, including Mr. Ban and his political chief, Jeffrey Feltman, have said on numerous occasions that a political solution is the only answer for long-term in the country and the region.

Since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011, more than 70,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed and some three million displaced.

May 3 2013 Russia Launches Surprise Military Exercise in Black Sea

May 3 2013 Russia Launches Surprise Military Exercise in Black Sea end times news update 4-26-13 Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched a large-scale surprise military drill to test battle readiness in the Black Sea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin surprised his defense minister in the wee hours of Thursday morning last week with an order for surprise military drills to test battle readiness in the Black Sea. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was awakened at 4:00 a.m. local time with sealed orders to activate 7,000 troops, 36 ships, up to 20 fighter jets and helicopters and 50 pieces of artillery.

Aviation, paratroopers and special forces are involved in the exercises, which were launched immediately according to Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said "We are talking about major exercises, intended as a check," according to Russian news agencies.

"According to international practice, exercises involving up to 7,000 people do not require us to inform our partners in advance," Peskov noted. He added that the drills would take place on three military test ranges on Russian territory and are expected to last about a week.

Russia has been heavily involved in protecting Syria's President Bashar al-Assad from international ire at the United Nations Security Council, but as Assad's grip on power has increasingly weakened, and fragmented rebel forces gain control over more territory in the country, Moscow has begun to quietly evacuate its citizens from Damascus and surrounds. Likewise Putin has joined discussions over what may become of Syria's lethal arsenal of chemical weapons of mass destruction, a rising concern in the international community.

The Black Sea is a strategic waterway bounded by Europe, Anatolia and the Caucasus, and connects to the Atlantic Ocean via the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas and two straits known as the Turkish Straits -- the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. The Bosphorus Strait, which flows through the middle of Turkey, connects it to the Sea of Marmara. The Strait of the Dardanelles connects that sea to the Aegean Sea region of the Mediterranean, which separate eastern Europe and western Asia. Countries with shoreline along the Black Sea include Turkey, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania, in addition to Russia.

Late last year Turkey requested -- and received -- authorization to deploy a number of batteries of Patriot missile defense systems along its border with Syria. The batteries, contributed by NATO allies that included the United States, were installed in January 2013.

March 2013 Russia threatens USA with Nuclear attack - end times news update MOSCOW Russia has reported efforts by the West to block weapons exports to Syria. Meanwhile, Sunni rebels in Syria are acquiring Russian-made weapons from Serbia.

A senior official said Western countries were using a range of
means to stop the shipment of Russian weapons to Damascus. The official
said, however, that the Kremlin has still maintained military deliveries to
the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Russian ships are lured into ports and arrested there under various devised pretexts," Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation director Alexander Fomin said. "When the ships are at sea, any insurance is canceled."

In a radio interview on March 2, Fomin did not specify cases in which
Russia failed to complete arms shipments. He said the attempts reflected an organized effort by the international community.

"A real war has been declared against us," Fomin said.

Over the last year, both Britain, Finland and Turkey reported the
interception of Russian defense shipments to Syria, including radars and main battle tank components. Damascus has been one of the two largest Middle East clients of Russia's defense industry.

Meanwhile, Sunni rebels have acquired what they termed a powerful
anti-tank weapon in their war against the regime of Syrian President Bashar
Assad.

Rebels have displayed the RPG-27, a shoulder-fired rocket-propelled
grenade launch system. The Russian-origin RPG was designed to penetrate the
armor of Syrian Army combat armored vehicles, including the T-72 main battle
tank.

In a display in northern Syria, rebels also unveiled the RPG-6 launcher,
another Russian weapon. The rebels said the weapons were
deployed by the so-called Victory Brigade, an Islamist rebel unit that
operates in the Hama province.

Another Islamist rebel militia, Ahrar Al Sham, also displayed the RPG-27
and -6. An Ahrar spokesman said Islamist militias have been sharing these
weapons as part of intensified coordination.

The RPG-6 was said to have been manufactured in Serbia under Russian
license. Earlier, Western reports asserted that Serbia was supplying
weapons to the rebels in a deal financed by Saudi Arabia.

Rebels said additional new heavy weapons were delivered to Islamist
militias in 2013. They said the weapons, which include the Chinese FN-6
surface-to-air missile, were also financed by Qatar.

Reports of additional Israeli missile attacks overnight raise tensions

Developing... Check back for updates...

Explosions that rocked the outskirts of Damascus overnight were caused by missiles unleashed by the Israeli military, according to various media reports. If these reports are confirmed, said one Syrian official on Sunday, the attack would be considered as a "declaration of war" by Israel.

Update: (12:09 PM EST)

Reporting on the latest response from the Syrian government, Al-Jazeera reports:

Syria's information minister has given warning that Israeli air raids against three targets on the outskirts of Damascus "open the door to all possibilities".

Omran al-Zoabi's comments in Damascus on Sunday came after an emergency cabinet meeting organised to respond to what a Western source said was a new attack on Iranian missiles bound for Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Although Zoabi did not hint at a concrete course of action, he said it was Syria's duty to protect the state from any "domestic or foreign attack through all available means".

He claimed the Israeli attacks are evidence of the country's links with "Islamic extremist groups" trying to the Syrian government.

Update: (11:03 AM EST)

Agence France-Presse reports that Israeli officials, under cover of anonymity, have confirmed that Israel was behind the overnight bombings inside Syria.

"The attack was very close to the airport, the target was Iranian missiles which were destined for Hezbollah," the senior official told AFP.

In response to the attack, both Egypt and the Arab League condemned the Israeli attack, with the office of Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi calling the bombing has "violated international law and principles that will further complicate the situation."

Earlier:

Israeli officials have yet to comment officially on the incident, but did confirm a separate missile strike carried out by Israel on Thursday.

Reuters reports:

Israel carried out its second air strike in days on Syria early on Sunday, a Western intelligence source said, in an attack that shook Damascus with a series of powerful blasts and drove columns of fire into the night sky.

Israel declined comment but Syria accused the Jewish state of striking a military facility just north of the capital - one which its jets had first targeted three months ago. Iran, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and an arch-enemy for Israel, urged states in the region to resist the Israeli attack.

People living near the Jamraya base spoke of explosions over several hours in various places near Damascus, including a town housing senior officials: "Night turned into day," one man said.

Video report from Al-Jazeera:

[ flash ]

NBC News reports that a senior US official confirmed to them that Israel was behind the attack and reported:

A rebel spokesman, who spoke from a “liberated area” held by the opposition in Damascus, told NBC News there were huge explosions just before 2 a.m. Sunday local time (7 p.m. Saturday ET) in the Qaysoun mountains on the edge of Damascus.

“Around 10 locations were hit," the spokesman said. "It was difficult to tell what was hit in the raid and what exploded afterwards. Some of the targets were weapons and weapons depots.

"Secondary explosions continued for about four hours. They shook all of Damascus. There was still smoke in the air as the sun came up.”

From its Damascus media office, the Free Syrian Army listed 9 apparent targets, including the Syrian Revolutionary Guard, the 104th brigade headquarters, a weapons depot in Qasyoun and a military research center at Jamraya.

And CNN adds:

A Syrian official called an attack Sunday on the nation's military research facility a "declaration of war" by Israel.

In an interview with CNN, Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al Mekdad said the attack represented an alliance between Islamic terrorists and Israel.

He added that Syria would retaliate against Israel in its own time and way.

Early Sunday morning, a series of massive explosions illuminated the predawn sky in Damascus, prompting more claims that Israel has launched attacks into the war-torn country.

Syria accused Israel of firing rockets into the Damascus suburb of Jamraya, striking the research center, Syrian state-run TV reported. The report claimed that the rocket attack on the research center aided rebels, who have been battling government forces in the region.

The Israeli military would not confirm or deny the Syrian TV claim that Israel had launched rockets.

"We do not comment on these reports at all," an Israeli military spokesperson said.
