"Justice makes
a nation great, and the greater a nation the more solicitous will it be
to see that injustice shall not befall even its most humble citizen. Woe
upon any nation when only those who possess money and influence can
secure ready justice before its courts! It is the sacred duty of a
magistrate to acquit the innocent as well as to punish the guilty. Upon
the impartiality, fairness, and integrity of its courts the endurance of
a nation depends. Civil government is founded on justice, even as true
religion is founded on mercy."
In Canada as well as United States freedom of religion is the
RULE OF
LAW and the right of the individual. No other power can remove a person
from this highest and basic right to take the spiritual liberty to make
the highest moral and ethical choice over and above all other possible
choices.
During the period of 1965-1973, more than 50,000 Americans made their
way to Canada, refusing to participate in an immoral war. At the time,
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau said: "Those who make a conscientious
judgment that they must not participate in this war... have my complete
sympathy, and indeed our political approach has been to give them access
to Canada. Canada should be a refuge from militarism."
Thirty years later, Canada is faced with the same moral choice – to give
refuge to those who refuse to be complicit in the US-led war on Iraq,
which many legal opinions have deemed illegal under international law.
No social
system or political regime which denies the reality of God can
contribute in any constructive and lasting manner to the advancement of
human civilization.
If we as a national family desire to uphold our high moral ground in the minds of
the citizens of other nations we must go forward in our determination to
become Peacemakers and to continue in our determination to be a refuge from militarism.
Our nations leaders are forming close associations with war minded
nations, and in so doing are placing all Canadians at risk in the world
as well as taking retrograde actions regarding the expressed wish of the
majority of the Canadian people to be at peace with all other nations
and individuals. These are most serious issues that can and will effect
the security of the Canadian people both at home and abroad in the
world.
Please take the time to inform yourselves of these important issues and
