In all major regions of the world, the economic
recession is deep-seated, resulting in mass unemployment, the
collapse of state social programs and the impoverishment of
millions of people.
The meltdown of financial markets was the result of
institutionalized fraud and financial manipulation. The economic
crisis is accompanied by a worldwide process of militarization,
a “war without borders” led by the U.S. and its NATO allies.
“This important collection offers the reader a
most comprehensive analysis of the various facets – especially
the financial, social and military ramifications – from an
outstanding list of world-class social thinkers.”

Kucinich Challenges
Potential Extrajudicial Killing of Americans
WASHINGTON - February 5 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH)
yesterday wrote to Attorney General Eric Holder following
news reports that Americans have been included on targeted
assassination lists maintained by the Central Intelligence
Agency (CIA) and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC).
The reports indicate that the President has authorized
military operations with the express understanding that
Americans might be killed under this policy. In the letter,
Kucinich requests the legal basis for revoking the
constitutional rights of any American citizens.
“Due process of law is a fundamental principle in our
Constitutional structure. Even the most superficial
reading of Article XIV makes it clear that extrajudicial
killings of U.S. citizens by the U.S. government or its
agents are by definition outside the law,” wrote Kucinich.
“The government has the right and the obligation to
protect the citizens of this country. However, I reject
the notion that we can accomplish this goal only by
violating international law and trampling on the
Constitution. Protecting the constitutional rights of
some citizens should not require revoking the
constitutional rights of other citizens,” said Kucinich in
the letter.

OpenMedia.ca has released a report entitled "Revitalizing
a Media Reform Movement in Canada," which is focused on
the potential for a broader movement for media change in
Canada. The report is the result of an in-depth Social
Science Research Council-funded study, a collaboration
between Simon Fraser University Communications Professor
Robert Hackett, OpenMedia.ca and the World Association for
Christian Communication (WACC).
The objective of this
research project was to identify issues, allies, resources
and frames that could facilitate successful media reform
campaigns, projects and partnerships. The research shows
that there is definitely potential for a much stronger
network and movement for change in media and
telecommunications in Canada.
Some key findings include:
Overwhelming recognition of the importance of the
Internet in NGO work and unanimous endorsement of the
principle of Net Neutrality as a regulatory underpinning
for equitable and affordable access to the Internet.
Values such as openness, accessibility,
participation, choice, diversity and innovation will
likely resonate well with NGOs in Canada.
Media reform organizations should consider some kind
of expansive institutional structure, such as an
association or network that can facilitate communication
and engagement with a broad and diverse array of
organizations.
"We want to make Canada's media as open and innovative
as possible, and this requires that we make smart and
informed decisions regarding the scope and direction of
our work," says Steve Anderson, national co-ordinator of
OpenMedia and a co-author of the report. "This study goes
a long way in illustrating the potential to expand our
work, and what steps we need to take to get there."
"The survey and the review of media policy issues shows
important shortcomings in how well Canada's media meet the
requirements of democracy, including cuts to local
journalism," says co-author Prof. Hackett. "But the survey
also suggests promising signs of a growth in citizen
awareness and activism around media issues."
Philip Lee, WACC Deputy Director of Programme, says
"The Canadian media scene is wide open for civil society
to get directly involved democratizing its communication
structures. It should seize the opportunity with both
hands."
Building from this study,
OpenMedia.ca is inviting citizens to provide input
concerning their work through an
online
survey. It will be shut down later this week, so
don't miss your chance to help define OpenMedia.
Visit the web address below to tell your friends about
this. Tell-a-friend!
Happy New Year to all of you Open Media supporters and
advocates!
Getting back to business, it's our job to keep you
aware of pressing media and Internet issues such as the
following:
The CRTC is currently reconsidering the role of
community television in Canada, paving the way for an
historic opportunity to create a rejuvenated, FRESH and
innovative independent media system.
Many people are unaware that two per cent of what cable
companies collect from their customers monthly is supposed
to be spent on community channels. BUT, rather than
provide community access to these resources as they
should, cable operators have used these channels and funds
to give themselves a competitive edge, and at times even
pocketing the money and shutting down studios entirely.
www.OpenMedia.ca supports a proposal by CACTUS
(Canadian Association of Community Television Users and
Stations) calling for the millions of dollars already
being collected by cable companies for community TV to be
liberated to independent media centres for use by all
Canadians. The CRTC can make this a reality. Please
send them a letter now!
The best part of the CACTUS plan is that Canadians
won't have to pay another dime. The money we are already
paying to cable companies would be directed to independent
media.
1. To support this vision, send a comment to the
CRTC NOW.
Media reports are suggesting the Prime Minister is going
to shut down Parliament which means all legislation currently
being debated would die.
The CTF is urging the Prime
Minister to simply recess Parliament and continue working on
this legislation in the New Year.
We've come so far in getting
legislation to abolish the long-gun registry past second
reading -- to start over again would be a monumental task!
It's urgent that you send a quick note and tell the Prime
Minister, thanks for supporting the legislation so far; don't
kill it now. Recess Parliament, don't prorogue Parliament!
-- Kevin, Lee, Troy and the
rest of the team
PS: We've just put up a
new campaign page supporting efforts to pass this
bill.
Check it out here.

Denis Halliday spent most
of his career with the United Nations in development and
humanitarian assistance-related posts both in New York and
overseas.
In 1997, he was appointed United Nations
Assistant Secretary General and head of the Humanitarian Program
in Iraq. One year later, after a 34-year career with the UN,
Halliday announced his resignation from the United Nations over
the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq, characterizing them as
"genocide".
In 2000, Halliday was
nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2003, he was presented
with the Gandhi International Peace Award. Since leaving the UN,
Denis Halliday has been involved in a number of peace

CALGARY: Lecture on "War

Consortium for Peace Studies
The Consortium for Peace Studies
at the University of Calgary presents
MICHEL CHOSSUDOVSKY
WAR &
THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS
The World is at the Crossroads of the Most
Serious Crisis in Modern History.
The US and NATO have
launched a profit driven military adventure in the Middle East
and Central Asia, which seeks to gain control over more than 60
percent of the World's oil and gas reserves.
This war is
characterised by a process of military escalation. Described
by the Pentagon as "the long war", a war without borders.
US-led military operations are now extending into new
frontiers. New US military bases are being constructed.
The US-NATO military
alliance is also threatening China and Russia with nuclear
weapons
The economic crisis is intimately related to the war agenda.
Financial hegemony is supported by US military might.
Thursday, November 26, 2009
7:00-9:00pm
University of
Calgary
Science Theater 145
2500 University Drive NW
Award winning author and economics professor, Michel
Chossudovsky, is Director of the Centre for Research on
Globalization, which hosts the critically acclaimed website
www.globalresearch.ca. On
November 26, he will discuss the implications of the US-NATO
military alliance on the Middle East and Central Asia. He will
demonstrate how the global economic crisis is intimately related
to the alliance's war agenda.
Michel Chossudovsky is
professor emeritus at the University of Ottawa. He has taught at
universities and academic institutions in North America, Western
Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific. He has also worked
for several United Nations organizations and has acted as
adviser to governments of developing countries. He is the
author of several international best sellers including, "The
Globalization of Poverty and the New World Order" (2003), and
"America's War on Terrorism" (2005). His writings have been
translated into more than 25 languages. He is also a contributor

Chebucto Community Net and the Dalhousie Student Union present
an Internet
Town Hall
entitled
"Who Is Shaping
Your Digital Future?"
scheduled for 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 pm, Monday, October 26th at the
McInnes Room of the Dalhousie University Student Union Building.
Doors open at 6:30 pm.
This Town Hall meeting,
open to the public,
will address four main points about Internet access in this
province - the Digital Divide and how poverty keeps people from
having access to the net, copyright laws
and Digital Rights Management (DRM) issues, net neutrality and
controlling the flow of information, and privacy - who has
access to your data and what they are doing with it.
The planned format is a thirty minute keynote address, followed
by five to ten minute talks from local experts on the four
fields; then questions and answers from the audience to the
panelists.
JP Morgan
announced its second-highest quarterly profits. Ever. $3.59
billion.
And cable giant Comcast said it wants to take over NBC Universal
(currently owned by GE).
Corporate America is going strong.
The rest of
us? Unemployment is up. Incomes are down. The number of
foreclosures is through the roof. The gap between the haves and
have-nots is wider than ever.
Financial reform? Forget it. Real healthcare reform? Not
even close.
According to a recent Bill Moyers report, JP Morgan's CEO is
on record saying that his 'biggest initiative' right now is
lobbying Washington.
$3.59 billion buys a lot of influence.
The sad
truth is this. The government we created to work for the
common good - and the media we created to keep that
government honest - have been bought and paid for by
mega-corporations.
Here's a
sobering thought. If the Comcast deal goes through, Comcast
would own Bravo, CNBC, NBC News (MSNBC), NBC Sports, NBC
Television Network, Oxygen, Syfy (Sci Fi Channel), Telemundo,
USA Network and the Weather Channel.
This one giant company could purchase the power to dictate
the programming seen and heard by millions of people - along
with the power to silence a host of independent and diverse
viewpoints. All in the name of corporate profits.
Mark Twain once wrote: "A newspaper is not just for
reporting news. It is to get people mad enough to do
something about it."
It's up to us to keep making people mad enough to do
something about 'it.'
