Jesus’ Promise: Christianity’s Decision

Today we find ourselves in the gateway of the promised “second mile” of the Fifth Epochal Revelation to our planet, Urantia. This initial stage began in the years during which The URANTIA Book, rather the revelation which it comprises, was received, and the “first mile” has to this time been devoted to the dissemination, study, and practice of its teachings.

However, when Jesus was alive on earth he told his apostles, “when the kingdom shall have come to it’s full fruition, be assured that the Father in heaven will not fail to visit you with an enlarged revelation of truth and an enhanced demonstration of righteousness” (1914 C).

And it is in The URANTIA Book where we learn the nature of the future fulfillment of the second part of Jesus’ promise: the enhanced demonstration of righteousness.This is prophesied in Urantia Paper 195(5) “THE MODERN PROBLEM” and runs through to the end of the book (2075 to 2097). It is here that we find depicted a picture of our own time, the evils besetting it, and how they are to be overcome. This will be accomplished by a New Revelation of Jesus, a living revelation, in which the gospel is not so much to be preached as it is to be experienced and lived -- demonstrated -- by those who in that way reveal Jesus and his gospel of the divinely-parented family of mankind to the world in a manner just as Jesus would if he were alive in the flesh today. Like Jesus of Nazareth, these people will have no ecclesiastical authority, but their words will directly affect the hearts and souls of those who hear them. However it will be their actions and lives, not their words, which confirm their spiritual credentials. When you observe them, you will see Jesus! And that is how they will be known.

“What a transcendent service if, through this revelation [The URANTIA Book], the Son of Man should be recovered from the tomb of traditional theology and be presented as the living Jesus to the church that bears his name, and to all other religions!” (2090 B)

“What an awakening the world would experience if it could only see Jesus as he really lived on earth and know, firsthand, his life-giving teachings!” (2083 C)

“The world needs to see Jesus living again on earth in the experience of spirit-born mortals who effectively reveal the master to all men.” (2084 A)

“In winning souls for the Master, it is not the first mile of compulsion, duty, or convention that will transform man and his world, but rather the second mile of free service and liberty-loving devotion that betokens the Jesusonian reaching forth to grasp his [or her] brother [and sister] in love and sweep [her or] him on under spiritual guidance toward the higher and divine goal of mortal existence.” (2984 C)

Christianity Must Choose!

In Paper 195(9) “CHRISTIANITY’S PROBLEM”, we are told that “a new and fuller revelation of Jesus is destined to conquer an empire of materialistic secularism and to overthrow a world sway of mechanistic naturalism” (2082 C). “Religion,” the supernal revelators tell us,

“does need new leaders, spiritual men and women who will dare to depend solely on Jesus and his incomparable teachings. If Christianity persists in neglecting its spiritual mission while it continues to busy itself with social and material problems, the spiritual renaissance must await the coming of these new teachers of Jesus’ religion who will be exclusively devoted to the spiritual regeneration of men. And then will these spirit-born souls quickly supply the leadership and inspiration requisite for the social, moral, economic, and political reorganization of the world.”

In Paper 195(10) THE FUTURE, we read that

“Christianity has indeed done a great service for this world, but what is most needed is Jesus (2084 A). “It is futile to talk about a revival of primitive Christianity; you must go forward from where you find yourselves. Modern culture must become spiritually baptized with a new revelation of Jesus’ life and illuminated with a new understanding of his gospel of eternal salvation. And when Jesus becomes thus lifted up, he will draw all men [and women] to himself. Jesus’ disciples should be more than conquerors, even overflowing sources of inspiration and enhanced living to all men. Religion is only an exalted humanism until it is made divine by discovery of the reality of the presence of God in personal experience.” (2082 D - 2083 A)

Christianity does have born-of-the-Spirit individuals, but as this passage points out it needs to direct more of their energies to the spiritual regeneration of mankind. It seems that the very segment which most openly recognizes and touches upon the need for spiritual rebirth (fundamentalists, evangelicals, and “non-denominationists”) is most concerned at present with promoting legislative remedies for social issues dealing with abortion, prayer in schools, homosexuality, and the teaching of “Creationism”. And presently a U.S. government program is underway which will effectively divert the churches -- as “faith-based charities” -- away from their spiritual mission, toward a social role.

Most of the preaching of the fundamentalist-type spiritual conversion method (which works, as I can attest from personally having asked Jesus to come into my heart) currently consists of “preaching to the choir” rather than taking the message out into the streets, where it is needed desperately! But even when it works as it should, newly born-of-the-spirit converts are quickly locked into cages of established doctrines and fixed-belief, where they are spoon-fed limited truths as established by ecclesiastical authorities and tradition. And they are given a fear-based, Hell avoidance, belief in an inerrant, infallible Bible as a handbook for life, which effectively scotches any dependance on the Spirit of Truth within them. Neither are they encouraged to creatively read the “Word of God” -- as these authorities unbiblically refer to the Bible -- so as to make up their own minds as to how its teachings may be best interfaced with their lives. But their leaders interpret the meanings for them, usually according to longstanding traditions, and there is no room for disagreement! If they don’t like it, they are ex-communicated from the “true” religion, and will likely spend eternity in hell (so they are taught). Added to this burden these converts are forced to carry are lists of rules, some of which are derived from the Bible, and some of which are not, but all of which must be followed upon the peril of their souls (again, so they are taught).

Generally such converts can be expected to fear and to judge as being “of Satan” anything new, such as The URANTIA Book or the New Revelation of Jesus, if it disagrees in any manner with their inculcated belief-system. But:

“The modern age will refuse to accept a religion which is inconsistent with facts and out of harmony with its highest conceptions of truth, beauty, and goodness. The hour is striking for a rediscovery of the true and original foundations of present-day distorted and compromised Christianity -- the real life and teachings of Jesus.” (2084 C)

Surely the Christian fellowship of believers will not hesitate to make such adjustments of faith and practices of living as will enable it to ’follow after’ the Master in the demonstration of his real life of religious devotion to the doing of the Father’s will and of consecration to the unselfish service of man.” (2090 C)

“To ‘follow Jesus’ means to personally share his religious faith and to enter into the spirit of the Master’s life of unselfish service for man. One of the most important things in human living is to find out what Jesus believed, to discover his ideals, and to strive for the achievement of his exalted life purpose. Of all human knowledge, that which is of greatest value is to know the religious life of Jesus and how he lived it.” (2090 D)

The Urantia Movement

It seems that the living reality of spirit birth is much overlooked as an experiential reality in the Urantia movement, although it is often given intellectual assent. Instead of allowing transformed behavior to result as naturally-occurring fruits of the spirit -- the product of genuine growth -- readers try to “put the teachings of The URANTIA Book into practice” by themselves somehow. It doesn’t work that way, nor was it meant to! That’s like trying to get online with an unpowered computer! One must first be born-again-of-the-spirit! The first question asked by tech support is usually, “Is it plugged in?” Jesus said:

“By the old way you seek to suppress, obey, and conform to the rules of living; by the new way you are first transformed by the Spirit of Truth and thereby strengthened in your inner soul by the constant spiritual renewing of your mind, and so are endowed with the power of the certain and joyous performance of the gracious, acceptable, and perfect will of God” (1609 C)

The New Revelation of Jesus: What is it?

The New Revelation of Jesus will happen not by the spread around the planet of words -- no matter how revalatory -- printed on paper or even electronically in sites like this, but by observing the lives and hearing the teachings of:

“new [religious] leaders, spiritual men and women who will dare to depend solely on Jesus and his incomparable teachings”, “spirit-born men and women” “who will be exclusively devoted to the spiritual regeneration of men”. (ref. 2082 D)

“The fact of Jesus’ earthly life provides a fixed point for the anchor of time, while the bestowal of the Spirit of Truth provides for the everlasting expansion and endless growth of the religion which he lived and the gospel which he proclaimed. … This new teacher will be forever unfolding to the truth-seeking believer that which was so divinely folded up in the person and nature of the Son of Man.” (2063 D)

“The Spirit of Truth came to help the believer to witness to the realities of Jesus’ teachings and his life as he lived it in the flesh, and as he now again lives it afresh in the individual believer of each passing generation of the spirit-filled sons of God. (2061 B)

It will be by witnessing the transformation wrought by the spirit in such lives, the sensing of their inner spiritual reality, as well as by the hearing of their words, that others will be led to seek and find, ask God for and be given the identical transformation for themselves. This will then spread like a chain reaction -- the whole world will gladly accept, eat, and digest this real, spiritual food. Jesus said:

“In your living and loving ministry serve spiritual food in attractive form and suited to the capacity of receptivity of each of your inquirers.” (1474 B)

And The URANTIA Book says:

“The common people heard Jesus gladly, and they will again respond to the presentation of his sincere human life of consecrated religious motivation if such truths shall be proclaimed to the world.” (2090 D)

It is the purpose of this website to open the floodgate of this New Revelation of Jesus and thereby cause its living waters to pour out of the pages of The URANTIA Book and into the lives and day by day experience of those who will accept the challenge, to the end that the new revelation of Jesus may be begun! There is no reason to put this off, and it will only come about by individual men and women, such as you and I, dedicate their lives to this project -- the divinely inspired spiritual regeneration of man, by man, and through man, with the aid of the Spirit of Truth and likely legions of angels!

Nearly three quarters of a century ago, The URANTIA Book’s supernal authors wrote:

“Urantia is now quivering on the very brink of one of its most amazing and enthralling epochs of social readjustment, moral quickening, and spiritual enlightenment.” (2082 C)

and:

“In winning souls for the Master, it is not the first mile of compulsion, duty, or convention that will transform man and his world, but rather the second mile of free service and liberty-loving devotion that betokens the Jesusonian reaching forth to grasp his brother in love and sweep him on under spiritual guidance toward the higher and divine goal of mortal existence … The call to the adventure of building a new and transformed human society by means of the spiritual rebirth of Jesus’ brotherhood of the kingdom should thrill all who believe in him as men have not been stirred since the days when they walked about on earth as his companions in the flesh”(2084 C-D).

What are we waiting for? Shall we sit and wait (and hope) for others to do it? Or shall we do our best to experience this thrill for ourselves? And, by the way, save the world!
